Oh, the kitchen. If there’s one room in the house that sees a lot of traffic, it’s this one. Not only is the kitchen messy by nature (after all, food prep, art projects and family gatherings all tend to take place in this room), it’s also the room in the house you’d like to keep the cleanest since you likely spend a good deal of time there.
Spring cleaning the kitchen might seem like a daunting task, but it’s not so bad. As Mary Poppins said, “well begun is half done,” and that’s true about this project. Knowing exactly where to start and forming a game plan is half the work.

Start with a “regular” clean-up
You need a semi-organized place to work, so start by giving the kitchen a normal cleaning – wash dishes, put away stuff that’s been left out on the counters and sweep the floor.
The second step is to dust everything (and we mean everything). Many parts of the kitchen get overlooked on a regular basis. These include ceilings, walls, molding and floorboards, vents, ceiling fans, blinds, pictures on the wall, etc. Think about this: every surface of your kitchen should be touched in this process.
Wash all linens
You likely keep your towels, washcloths, and rags washed on a regular basis, but what about drapes, valences, placemats and tablecloths? Spring cleaning is the perfect time to get all these washed, and the good news is you can be washing them while you attend to the rest of the cleaning.
Clean the oven and refrigerator
Most ovens have a self-cleaning setting, so apply oven cleaner to the inside and let it go. While it’s cleaning, you can tackle the refrigerator. Throw out old condiments and other foods that won’t be eaten. Take everything out of the fridge in order to give it a good washing. Once that’s done, remove burner covers and knobs from the range and wash those.
Don’t forget small appliances
Those small appliances – like toasters, bread makers, coffee makers, and mixers need a thorough cleaning too.
Clean out the cabinets
Take everything out of kitchen cabinets and toss foods that are expired, stale or won’t be consumed. Sift through dishes and glasses and donate anything that you won’t be using. Once everything is out, you’ll be much more organized about putting it back in.
