The holidays might be over, but that chill in the air certainly isn’t. And you know as well as we do that Las Vegas isn’t immune from some dipping winter temperatures. While that might be a nice reprieve from our summer heat, it can also add to a huge energy bill at the end of the month. Don’t worry; your Las Vegas window cleaner has your back! If you need to draft proof your home (or determine where those drafts are coming from), read on!
Locating Drafts:
As your experienced Las Vegas window cleaner, we know a thing or two about poorly sealed windows. What you may not know is that those windows may be letting the cold are in – and your costly energy out. To find out where the drafts are coming from, light a match or hold a candle and trace it along your window frame. If the flame flickers, your window is likely poorly sealed. Be sure to trace your candle along the outer frame as well, as this could be the source of the draft rather than the window pane itself.
Draft-Proofing Windows:
Now that you’ve determined which windows are draft culprits, do something about it! While new windows would be ideal, these can be expensive and a hassle to install. For a lower-cost fix, try rubber weather sealing, available at your hardware store. Rubber weather sealing allows you to cut strips to fit your windows and then adhere the material yourself to close up any gaps.
Another option is a window insulation kit, also available at hardware stores. This kit will include plastic shrink film that you’ll apply to your window frame. While this is a cheap and effective method of keeping out the cold air, it can compromise the clarity of your windows.
For form and function, you can insulate your windows and save energy by hanging heavy curtains. The heaver the fabric, the more protection you’ll have against drafts and the warmer your house will be.
