How to Banish Hard Water Stains

January 17, 2021 by Cody Lewis Leave a Comment

hard water stainsThere’s nothing like a beautiful, clear window to bring light into your home and help any room become a bit more inviting.  On the other hand, there’s nothing like hard water stains to make your windows (and in turn, your home, seem older, duller a bit more lifeless.

Of course, with sprinklers and weather, those hard water stains can be difficult to keep up with. These stains come from water that is high in mineral content, like calcium and magnesium. As the water hits the window and then as the water evaporates, sediment is left behind, creating unsightly stains. When not properly cleaned, these minerals can build up and create cloudy, unattractive windows.

Banish Hard Water Stains in Just a Few Steps:

If you’ve got a window that’s clouded with hard water deposits, don’t despair. Your windows will glisten soon enough with this easy home treatment.

First, find an empty spray bottle. You can purchase these at most stores, or simply reuse an empty cleaning bottle (make sure you rinse it out well first). Fill the bottle halfway with water. If you have hard water at your house (as you likely do, since it’s leaving stains on your windows!) using bottled water may be more effective.

Next, fill the bottle the rest of the way with plain white vinegar. While a 1:1 ratio of water to vinegar should work fine, you may want to increase the amount of vinegar to water you use for especially tough stains. Shake the bottle to thoroughly mix the solution.

Spray the windows affected with hard water stains and let the solution sit for 10 minutes. Then, using a dampened soft cloth (like a car wash chamois), wipe the windows clean. You should no longer be able to see the hard water stains. If you do, you may want to spray the area again and let the solution sit another 10 minutes.

Once wiped clean, dry the window with a dry, soft towel.

Of course, if you want sparkling windows without the hassle, give your friends at Window Sparkle a call today.
