You probably don’t want to spend too much time in maintaining the look of clean windows. Here are a few simple methods you can use to cut down on constant upkeep of your windows.
Outside windowsills and frames
Maintaining outside windowsills and frames can be challenging; however, there are a few simple tricks you can use to help with this matter.
If your wooden window frames have black or gray mildew on them you can wash them with a bleach-detergent solution.
Use 2 ounces of household bleach and 1 ounce of laundry detergent in a quart of water. After sponging the solution on the spots let it sit for 10 minutes and then rinse it off.
As far as windowsills that get dirty quickly applying a coat of floor wax will help to protect them from the elements.
Windows that streak or get dirty too fast
In order to avoid streaks on windows after washing use a squeegee with a soft rubber edge. Dry a 1inch section of glass and start with the squeegee there; starting with an area of dry glass helps to prevent streaking.
Washing windows in direct sunlight will cause streaking because the windows will dry too fast. Pick a cloudy day or an evening to wash windows to prevent streaking from occurring
If you notice the interior glass on your windows getting dirty faster than normal you may need to change the filter on your furnace or air conditioner. A filter needs changed whenever you can’t see light through the filter when you hold it up.
If the reason for window grime is secondhand smoke then you will need to use a solution that contains ammonia. Add 1cup of lemon scented ammonia to 2 ½ gallons of water.
The ammonia will cut through the dirt and the lemon scent will leave your house smelling better.
Shades, blinds and screens can add to a dirty outlook
Your windows may be clean but this won’t help if your shades, blinds or screens are filthy. Use a soft cloth or Swiffer to dust shades often. If you notice spots or stains on the shades then it is time to wash them.
The easiest way to accomplish this is by washing them in a bathtub or shower. Use a ¼ cup of white vinegar in a quart of water to get your shades nice and clean.
If your blinds seem to attract dust quickly spray them with an anti-static spray. Use Static Guard on the blinds after you have cleaned them.
It is best to wash screens outside. Shake the dirt and dust loose by rapping the screen lightly against a hard surface.
Use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the screens on both sides with lemon-scented dishwashing detergent and hot water. Thoroughly rinse and air- dry the screens before reinstalling.
